What is SpamAssassin?
InterMind
has implemented an e-mail filtering program
to help detect SPAM (also known as unsolicited
e-mail). Each incoming e-mail is scanned for
signs that it may be SPAM, it uses a wide
range of heuristic tests on mail headers and
body text to identify "SPAM", and
if it is determined that it's likely to be
SPAM, it is altered to clearly reflect this,
so that you -- the user -- can decide whether
to delete or keep it.
SpamAssassin
does not filter email-borne viruses. SpamAssassin
is focused on identifying SPAM, and not viruses.
The mechanism of scanning for viruses is different,
and software tailored for virus scanning is
much better at this task.
This
service is optional and at no cost. To activate
the SpamAssassin go to: https://www2.intermind.net/spamassassin_signup.html
Due
to the complexity of SpamAssassin; it may
take 24 hours before it is activated.
Here
is how it works, SpamAssassin scans all incoming
messages to determine if it is SPAM or not.
A rating is given to each e-mail, and if the
threshold is reached, the e-mail is flagged
as SPAM. The SPAM flag appears in the subject
line as "*****SPAM DETECTED*****",
and follow by a list of reasons which is added
to the body of the message.
To
manage your flagged SPAM e-mails, you can
set up a "Rule" or "Filter"
to move it directly to the trash or to a specified
folder.
Go to: Outlook Express
Move to Trash Rule/Filter
Go to: Outlook Express
Move to Sub folder
Rule/Filter
Most
other E-mail programs have similar "Filtering"
or "Rules" that can be configured,
please refer to the Outlook Express Rule as
a general guideline.
Sometimes
SpamAssassin will get a "false
positive", resulting in tagged
e-mails, which are not actually SPAM at all.
Since spammers don't usually highlight the
fact that their mail is unwanted, unsolicited
ads, SpamAssassin has to try to work it out
-- and it's not always easy to do.
To
prevent future messages from being flagged
as SPAM, you can add the e-mail address of
the sender not to be flagged as SPAM.
Go to: SpamAssassin
Control Panel
If
you do not get much SPAM, count yourself lucky,
then! The longer your email address stays
valid, the more SPAM you will get. It may
not be a problem for you -- yet -- but others
find it very frustrating. Some recent research
has indicated that several ISP's find their
incoming mail is between 30% and 50% SPAM,
overall; and quite a few old-timers who've
used the same address for years, get over
30 SPAM' messages a day.
If
you don't get much SPAM, you probably find
SpamAssassin more annoying than useful.
How
Can I Turn SpamAssassin Off?
You
have two options. First, SpamAssassin can
be made a lot less sensitive. To do this,
go to http://www.intermind.net/spamassassin.html
and you can set the threshold level to be
less sensitive, a settings from 5-7 will catch
most of SPAM messages, or you can turn it
off altogether in the control panel. http://www.intermind.net/spamassassin.html

InterMind
cannot be held responsible for the content
or altered content of e-mails using SpamAssassin.
This is a computer controlled software program,
which makes decisions on qualifying SPAM and
may produce false positives. Spamassassin
does not delete any E-Mails, it only tags
them as potential SPAM. It is the responsibility
of the end user to delete or save their e-mail
messages. This service is provided "as
is", and customers can cancel at anytime.
